The White Calla Lily
The white calla lily is a truly unique and beautiful flower with a shape like no
other. White calla lilies are grown from roots called tubers and are known under many
different names such as Arum Lilies, Calla Lilies, Zantedeschia and Trumpet lilies. Originating
from South Africa, white calla lilies are part of the Zantedeschia genus. Now grown commercially
for the flower market, white calla lilies are available between February and September. They can
still be found in later months, but are force grown, in very short supply and, as a result, very
expensive.
The white calla lily is a very popular wedding flower and is extensively used in
table arrangements, bridal bouquets, button holes and venue decoration creating a sophisticated and
modern feel. There are many different varieties of white calla lilies, offering a whole range
of shapes and sizes. For example, Crystal Blush has a small compact flower head with a choice
of stem length ranging between 40cm and 70cm tall. (As with all flowers, the taller the
stem, the larger the flower head). The varieties Avalanche and White Dream have medium sized flower
heads and are usual available in stem lengths of 70 or 80cm tall. The largest variety being Colombe
de la Paix - the King of White Calla Lilies.
White Calla Lilies do have a big downfall though! Their natural growing season
finishes at the end of August and as a result supply is at its lowest in the biggest wedding month
of the year. Although, still available the prices are always excessively high.
Calla lilies are also available in a huge range of colours apart from
white. There are some wonderful pastel shades such as creams, peaches and pale
pinks. Some bright, vibrant colours such as cerises, oranges, reds, golds and yellows. There are
also some stunning blacks, two tones and greens to choose from.
